1965年、東京に生まれる。徳川家康公から数えて第19代当主にあたります。慶應義塾大学経済学部卒業後、米ミシガン大学大学院にて経済学修士号を取得し、国連食糧農業機関(FAO)ローマ本部およびベトナム支部で国際経済・開発政策に従事。その後、米コロンビア大学大学院にて政治学修士号を取得。

2000年の帰国後は、翻訳家・政治経済評論家として、経済思想、国際政治、歴史・制度研究などの分野で著作と翻訳を手がけ、海外の主要文献を日本に紹介してきました。

2021年6月、公益財団法人徳川記念財団理事長に就任。2023年1月には正式に德川宗家第19代当主として家督を継承。歴史的資産の保護とともに、江戸期に育まれた精神性や文化の現代的継承に取り組んでいます。

著書に『自分を守る経済学』(ちくま新書)、『マルクスを読み直す』(筑摩選書)。訳書に『豊かさの誕生』『大いなる探求』『最強国の条件』など多数。

Iehiro Tokugawa was born in Tokyo in 1965 as a member of the Tokugawa Shogun Family, the direct lineage of Tokugawa Ieyasu. He is the nineteenth head of the family.

He graduated from Keio University and earned a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Michigan. He then worked at the FAO in Rome and Vietnam, before completing a Master's degree in Political Science at Columbia University.

Since returning to Japan in 2000, he has been active as a writer, translator, and commentator in economic thought, international politics, and historical studies.

In June 2021 he became Chairman of the Tokugawa Memorial Foundation. In January 2023 he formally succeeded as the 19th Head of the House of Tokugawa Shogun.
